ENGAGEMENT RING OR ALLIANCE, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Which ring to choose and on which occasion? It is sometimes difficult to find your way around, as these jewels offer diverse and varied styles, in addition to carrying sometimes very strong symbolism. In order not to make a mistake when choosing your rings, here are the main points to know to differentiate them.

The rings have gone through the centuries. The oldest are over 20,000 years old. Throughout history, they have therefore adopted many styles. And meanings. The materials, the finger on which the ring is worn, the style…, all these criteria define the type of ring, whether or not it has a symbolic value. Thus, the rings are worn on all fingers, on the hand and even on the foot; it can also cover only one phalanx. The rings are made of ivory, bronze, silver, gold, steel, platinum, ceramics, plastic... They can be decorated with precious stones, fine stones, metal ornaments... At each age, at each occasion, we can find a ring that suits us.

THE ENGAGEMENT RING FOR THE REQUEST

It is customary, before a marriage, for the man to ask for the hand of the woman he is in love with to be betrothed to him. It is a promise for a commitment to come. The engagement covers the period from this initial request to the actual marriage. This important moment in the life of a couple is symbolized by an engagement ring .

This ring is most often a thin ring in yellow or white gold and surmounted by a stone. Diamonds are often held back, as these gemstones are associated with pure, undying love. Besides the solitaire diamond, the engagement ring can also involve other stones, such as rubies, emeralds and sapphires. They can be mounted alone or supported by other gems. Trilogy rings are also very fashionable, with their triplet of sparkling stones. The engagement ring is traditionally worn by the woman on the ring finger of the left hand, because, during antiquity, it was thought that this finger was crossed by a "vein of love", the only one that connected the heart we thought then.

THE ALLIANCE TO CELEBRATE THE UNION

Wedding rings are exchanged at the time of marriage between the man and the woman. Usually it is a simple ring, in gold or silver, devoid of artifice. Wedding rings are often chosen to be worn identically by the couple. They seal forever the love that unites lovers. However, wedding rings can offer a variety of designs. We thus find alliances composed of several intertwined rings, often three in number and of different colors: white, yellow and pink gold. Some wedding bands are also encrusted with diamonds or other sparkling stones. The rings are more or less thick, have curved, striated surfaces... Finally, wedding rings are often engraved. The simple shape of the ring makes it possible to engrave inside, or even outside,

In France, the wedding ring is traditionally worn on the left ring finger. It then replaces the engagement ring, which moves on the ring finger of the right hand. If their size and style allow it, then engagement ring and wedding band can be worn together on the same finger.
