How to write an effective motivation letter?

Here are ten tips for drawing attention to your motivation letter… and your application!

Have you ever noticed that it is impossible to apply for a job offer on Espresso-Jobs without adding text to the "motivation letter" box? We decided to make this field mandatory to encourage candidates to personalize their application and to stand out . But your letter still needs to be read . Here are our tips for writing an effective , creative and original motivation letter .

1. Don't repeat your resume.

Think of the letter of intent as a marketing tool that supports your resume . This is a short pitch in which you explain who you are , why you are applying for the job, and why you should be called back . You can highlight certain aspects of your CV that you want to emphasize, but you should not summarize it or quote excerpts from it. Use this text to add value to your application! For example, you can give more explanation by specifying why you are changing careers, why you are moving, or why an experience was formative to fulfill the duties of the position.

2. Do your research.

Gather as much information as possible about the company where you are applying: on the mission and vision , customers , competitors , recent projects , social media used, etc. Try to  understand the needs of the organization to see how your skills can be useful there.

3. Personalize your letter.

You win by finding the name of the person you are talking to. Prefer the use of "For Human Resources" rather than "To whom it may concern" or "Madam, Sir".

Also, avoid generic or bombastic formulas such as:

• “My skills and my experience in the field make me the ideal candidate for this position”

• “Please accept the expression of my most distinguished sentiments”

Recruiters receive hundreds of letters… Imagine the number of times they have had to read these abstract and impersonal sentences! If you don't write something of your own, you will quickly be unmasked and your resume will go unnoticed .

4. Grab attention from the first sentence.

Your opening sentences play a crucial role in determining whether the reader will bother to read you to the end . If he decides to stop reading, he will not open your attachment containing your CV and your application will not be considered! To grab the recruiter's attention, you can start with a story , a question , or a quote . Try to put yourself in the recruiter's shoes and ask yourself questions.

5. Be specific.

Instead of saying you're an organized person, give specific examples of when you've had to be organized. Promote a colorful vocabulary! To arouse the reader's interest, you can use storytelling techniques to tell stories about your work experiences.

6. Be concise.

Your motivation letter should be no longer than one page . Keep paragraphs short and airy. Each sentence must be carefully chosen and bring something new. If not, delete it!

7. Use ad keywords.

Do you know the mirror interview technique? By imitating the gestures of your interlocutor, you give the impression of understanding them well and being on the same wavelength as them. You can use this same technique to write your letter, drawing inspiration from the vocabulary used in the job offer . This strategy can also benefit you if the employer uses an automated application management system, your keywords allowing you to stand out.

8. Write impeccably

The letter of intent also acts as a showcase of your writing skills. Take care of the typos and have yourself proofread if necessary!

9. Take care of your presentation.

In addition to writing your motivation letter in the field for this purpose, we recommend that you add a version of it to the PDF document of your CV. This makes it easier for the recruiter, who will have all the information about you in one place. It's not necessarily what will get you an interview, but the attention will surely be appreciated. Also, use  legible typography  and at least 10 point . Always keep in mind that your goal is to make reading your letter enjoyable.

10. Leave room for originality.

Remember that the letter of intent is not decisive for all types of positions. Consider, for example, jobs where the visual portfolio is particularly important, such as in video games or 3D animation . The purpose of the letter is to convince the recruiter that you are the right candidate. If you have a brilliant idea to grab attention without writing a letter, be creative and give it a try!
