How do you motivate yourself to revise for exams? [6 tips]

Finding and maintaining your motivation is above all a question of state of mind! However, it is not easy to always be motivated. So we thought of you! Discover our 6 tips to boost you and help you revise your exams .

1- Arrange your work environment to study

As simple as it may seem, setting up your work environment well can almost revolutionize the way you study and trigger your motivation . It must be arranged in such a way that you feel good in it! Be careful not to overload your workspace too much, you could create the opposite effect and clutter your mind. 😉

It is a place where you will spend most of your time, do not hesitate to invest in a good office chair. It is an essential piece of equipment to prioritize to optimize your productivity.

2- Block yourself from “deep work” slots

Disable your notifications, social networks, games (Candy Crush), emails… for maximum concentration and immerse yourself in a moment of work . Notifications are interruptions that distract you from your goals and impact your productivity and motivation.

3- Set goals to revise your course

Having a goal means having a why! It's knowing where you want to put your time and effort. Goals improve your performance! Because we know what to focus on and we manage to distinguish the tasks that are important.

Before attacking your revisions, ask yourself and define your objectives. You can use mind mapping to help you do this exercise. This tool will allow you to synthesize your ideas in the form of a structured diagram.

Take a white sheet and note in the center your general idea, you can represent it in the form of a sentence or a word and circle it. Then write the ideas that come to your mind by connecting them with arrows to the circle. They can also be linked together. This technique is perfect for setting your goals and defining your priorities for your organization.

4- Become a TO DO LIST expert

With your goals in mind and good working conditions, it's time to write down your different tasks, in the form of a to do list. ✔️

The benefits of this technique!

The to do list that…

  • free the mind,
  • Help to memorize,
  • Facilitates priority management,
  • Reduces your stress level,
  • Help to visualize the progress of your work.

The little extra: They provide a feeling of accomplishment! One of the best moments in a review session is crossing off a completed task. By doing this, you create a feeling of satisfaction and you generate motivation to continue studying.

5- STOP procrastination!

Procrastination: the number one enemy of motivation! Everyone knows her. It's the art of procrastinating. It is also the art of waiting for the last minute. To keep the desire to study, it is sometimes necessary to take action.

So get started! Repeat the previous steps and immerse yourself in your revisions. Satisfaction will be all the greater if you manage to achieve your goals in a very short time 💪.

6- Reward yourself to maintain your motivation to learn

It is important to reward yourself after a work session to motivate you to study.

But why ?

In our brain, we have a functional and fundamental "reward" system. It is essential to provide you with the necessary motivation to carry out an action such as studying.

But how does it work?

By repeating the release of endorphins after working, your brain assimilates the cause (the work) and the consequence (the reward) and makes the connection between the two. This is why it is important to keep time for yourself as a reward for the work provided, to succeed in motivating yourself.

Example of reward:

  • Doing something you enjoy is a reward. They allow you to disconnect and rest to be completely focused again on a new task. Several studies have shown that staying focused throughout the day on multiple tasks, without real breaks, is counterproductive!
  • The Pomodoro method (no, it's not the name of a pizza...) is a technique that you can try to manage your time. The principle is to stay focused on a task for an interval of 25 min (1 interval = 1 Pomodoro) then to take a break of 5 min. And after 4 Pomodoros, to take a longer break of 15 to 30 min.

Doing something you enjoy is a reward . You can take advantage of the reopening of bars and restaurants to sip a drink on the terrace, or do yoga, walk or play sports. These different actions allow you not only to reduce your stress, but also to increase your brain cells.
